PEORIA, Ill. — The Wright State baseball program split a doubleheader to Bradley on Saturday at Dozer Park, earning a 2-0 shutout in the opener before falling 5-4 in 10 innings in game two.
The Raiders (13-15) will conclude the three-game set tomorrow at 2 p.m. ESPN3 will stream the non-conference matchup.
Game 1 (7 innings) - Wright State 2, Bradley 0
WSU recorded its second shutout of the season, scattering four hits and three walks over seven innings.
Starting pitcher
Jake Shirk (3-4) lasted five innings on the mound, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out a pair of batters.
Jay Luikart arrived in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning, escaping a one-out, bases-loaded jam with consecutive strikeouts. He then pitched a scoreless seventh inning to seal the win and his fourth save of the season.
Wright State's defense did its part by turning a season-high three double plays. In total, the Braves stranded five runners on base.
The Raiders were limited to a season-low two hits offensively but took advantage of three errors committed by Bradley.
Justin Riemer batted 1-for-4 with a run scored, while
Andrew Patrick had a bunt single in the seventh inning.
Zane Harris drove in a run with a sac fly in the top of the sixth.
Wright State plated the game's first run in the top of the fifth, as Luikart reached base on a walk and came around to score later in the inning on a fielding error. Riemer led off the sixth inning with a single and reached second on a sac bunt by
Alec Sayre and third on a throwing error. Harris brought him home on a sac fly to deep center, cushioning the Raiders' edge to 2-0.
The game remained 2-0 in favor of WSU the rest of the way, resulting in a series-opening win for the Raiders.
Game 2 (10 innings) - Wright State 4, Bradley 5
Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Luikart forced extras by blasting a solo home run over the right-field wall. However, in the bottom of the 10th inning, BU's Jackson Chatterton reached third base on a single, a stolen base, and a passed ball before scoring the winning run on a fielders choice to the pitcher.
In the loss, Luikart led the Raiders with a pair of solo home runs.
Sammy Sass had an RBI single in his first plate appearance, while Harris had an RBI sac fly for the second game in a row.
Drew Baker reached base twice on a walk and a hit by pitch.
WSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a sac fly by Harris and an RBI single off the bat of Sass. The advantage extended to 3-0 in the top of the fourth, as Luikart blasted his first homer of the game.
Starting pitcher
Sebastian Gongora was cruising on the mound with eight strikeouts through five shutout innings but was tagged for two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Braves took their first lead of the day in the frame, 4-3, after scoring another two runs off reliever
Donnie Nicodemus.
The Raider offense went down in order in the seventh and eighth frames, leaving the score at 4-3 in favor of Bradley heading into the final inning.
Tristan Haught kept the Raiders within reach, allowing no runs on just two hits and two walks in 3.1 innings.
Logan Tabeling (0-2) was dealt with the loss in the 10th inning after allowing an unearned run.
