Shaunda Sandifer, a junior middle blocker on the Wright State volleyball team, was named All-Midwest Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association Wednesday.
Sandifer (Calumet City, IL/Thornton Fractional North) finished the season leading the Raiders with a .289 hitting percentage with 434 total kills and 112 total blocks. An All-Horizon League selection for the second straight year, she ranked fifth in the League in percentage, fourth in kills and 10th in blocks. Sandifer registered 20 or more kills three times, including 24 against IPFW on September 29 and versus Green Bay on October 10. She posted a season-high nine blocks in that match against the Phoenix.
"We are excited that the coaches in and outside the Horizon League chose to honor Shaunda," said WSU head coach Trina Smith. "This is a great honor for her and our program overall. Shaunda's dedication to volleyball and WSU has elevated her game to a new level and I look forward to coaching her again next year."
Named the Horizon League Player of the Week on August 31, Sandifer was chosen to the VCU/Third Degree Sportswear Invitational All-Tournament Team the first week of the season. In subsequent weeks, she was named the MVP of the Oakland Golden Grizzly Invitational and to the all-tournament teams at the WSU Raider Challenge and the West Virginia Invitational.
Sandifer becomes the second Wright State player to be chosen All-Region since the program moved up to Division I in 1987, joining Karis Day in 2001.
