Shaunda Sandifer, a sophomore middle blocker on the Wright State volleyball team, has been selected as the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending November 8, the league office announced on Monday.
Sandifer (Calumet City, IL/Thornton Fractional North) helped lead the Raiders to a four-set decision over Dayton at the Frericks Center Saturday in WSU's only action of the week. She hit .387 overall for the match as she posted a team-high 17 kills along with three solo blocks. Wright State won the final three sets of the match as Sandifer hit .714 (5/0/7) with a solo block in the second set, hit .667 (7/1/9) with another solo block in the third and had three more kills in the fourth.
Prior to Saturday, Dayton's only home loss was a five-set decision to #18 Purdue during the Dayton Flyer Classic. It was WSU's first win in the series since a straight set victory on September 18, 2001 and the first Raider victory at UD since a four-set decision on October 30, 1990.
Sandifer currently ranks second in the Horizon League in hitting percentage at .289 and is also second in blocks per set at 1.09 as she has recorded 121 blocks (27 solo, 94 assisted) in 111 sets this season. In League matches only, Sandifer leads the way with a .327 hitting percentage and is third in blocks per set at 1.11 with 61 blocks (13 solo, 48 assisted) in 55 sets.
It is the first time that a Wright State player has been selected as the Player of the Week since Tara Geegan and Lexi Leonhard were named the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, on November 5, 2007.
Wright State (14-14, 9-5 Horizon) wraps up the regular season this weekend with a trip to Indiana as the Raiders face Butler on Friday, November 14, at 7:00 followed by Valparaiso on Saturday, November 15, at 5:00 Eastern time.
