The Wright State volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw Saturday as Valparaiso picked up its 12th straight win with a three-set Horizon League decision in the regular-season finale for both teams, winning 25-19, 25-19, 25-16 at the ARC.
The Raiders were up 9-8 in the first set until the Crusaders scored five straight points to take the lead for good. Valparaiso pulled away again in the second set as they scored four consecutive points to break a 16-16 deadlock and closed the set with a 5-1 burst.
The Crusaders then led the entire way in the third set as they scored the first six points, including two kills each from Allison Sears and Val Bollenbacher.
Valparaiso finished with a 51-26 kill advantage and outhit WSU .302-136.
Leonhard led the way for the Raiders with 12 kills while Gunn added six. Michelle Hammond had 22 assists and nine digs and Leilani Tafuna chipped in 14 digs.
Angie Porche and Sears each had 13 kills for Valparaiso (23-6, 12-4 Horizon).
Wright State (15-15, 10-6 Horizon) now turns its attention to next week's Horizon League Tournament, which begins Thursday in Cleveland. The #3 seeded Raiders will take on #6 seed and host Cleveland State in the quarterfinals on Friday, November 21, at 7:30.
