Oct. 29, 2009
DAYTON, Ohio – The Wright State softball team took some time to help out some furry friends on Saturday, October 24 as they aided the staff in some winterizing of the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center. The Green and Gold got to help tidy up the building, see the behind the scenes work and interact with some of the animals housed at the shelter.
"Volunteering at the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center was truly a rewarding experience,” said senior Jamie Perkins. “It gave us the opportunity to donate our time and effort back to the community that's been so supportive of us. Cleaning and helping with the daily chores was just a small price to pay for the chance to give the animals some extra attention and love."
The Raiders chipped in as volunteer hands as they cleaned up the animal-human meeting room, the shelter’s common area and got a crash course in what the charge of the shelter was. The entire team, coaching and support staff attended the session, and received a tour of the entire facility. WSU’s athletic trainer Becca Phillips came away with the ultimate reward, the adoption of a three-year old beagle.

"This was a great opportunity for our players to give back to the community,” said head coach Linda Garza. “All of us have a better appreciation for how much work goes into managing an animal resource center. The athletes immediately stepped in and assisted the staff in day to day operations and up keep. The interaction with the animals put smiles on everyone’s face and that alone made the event a success."
The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center moved into their new state-of-the-art, 24,000 square foot complex in March of 2005 and is the largest companion animal shelter in the Greater Dayton area. The Animal Resource Center receives over 7,000 dogs and 3,500 cats each year and adopts out nearly 2,000 animals each year. The shelter is located at 6790 Webster Street in Dayton and is open from 10-6, Monday-Friday, and 10-4 on Saturday and Sunday.
