DAYTON, Ohio – Brian Cothern contributed on each goal for the Wright State men’s soccer team on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field, scoring the match-tying goal and assisting on the golden goal in the Raiders 2-1 double-overtime match with IUPUI. Corey Whisenhunt picked up his third win in net for the Green and Gold and collected his second assist, while Brad Bamberger struck with the match winner.

“Tonight’s match was another great step for our program and this young team,” said head coach Bryan Davis. “As a group, we need to continue to improve on our early-match defensive efforts, but the intensity and drive of our players has been at a great level in our last two matches.”

The Jaguars netting the opening goal at the 19:17 mark when Nate Ohmer took a shot from 25-yards out on the right flank that found the back of the net. It was the second goal of the season for Ohmer and gave IUPUI an early 1-0 lead.

The Raiders held the shot advantage in the opening frame, 10-7, and took five corner kicks to one for IUPUI. Whisenhunt made four saves in the opening 45-minutes for WSU, while Alex Mannen for IUPUI made three saves.

Three minutes into the second half the Raiders had a golden opportunity to tally the equalizer when Brian Cothern took a shot that was saved by the IUPUI keeper and went out of bounds. On the ensuing corner kick, Aaron Denney played a high arching ball into the box that Austin List headed towards an open net, but the shot bounced off the crossbar and was cleared by the Jaguars.

The Green and Gold knotted the game at 1-1 when Cothern connected on his fourth tally of the season at the 81:11 mark. After a long boot by Whisenhunt, Jordan Haggit deflected the long kick and Cothern connected on a hard shot to the near post.

The Raiders connected on the golden goal in the 104th minute when Cothern setup freshman Brad Bamberger at the mouth of the goal. Cothern teed up a free kick from 35-yards out and served a ball into the 18-yard box. Bamberger chipped an off-balance shot that just cleared the head of the IUPUI goalkeeper and bounced in for the match-winner.

“It was fitting for Brian to score the first goal and later set up the winner” said Davis.  “He was all over the field tonight and gave his maximum effort all match. We need to continue to compete at that level as a team to achieve our goal of getting a shot at playing for the championship at season’s end.”

It was the 21st shot of the match for Wright State, the fourth goal of the season for Bamberger and gave Whisenhunt his third victory in goal. WSU held a 21-10 edge in shots, took ten corner kicks to one for the Jaguars and Whisenhunt made six saves in net for WSU.

The next match for the Green and Gold will be on Saturday, October 24 when they entertain Cleveland State for a Horizon League tilt. The Raiders are now 4-8-1 and will square off with the Vikings starting at 7:00 under the lights at Alumni Field.
