The Wright State University men's basketball team defeated Detroit 63-57 in Horizon League play Saturday at WSU's Nutter Center. Zakee Boyd led all scorers with 19 points and hit five of nine from beyond the three-point arch to lead the Raiders.
"Our team showed a lot of heart against a tough, athletic, talented Detroit team," Raider coach Paul Biancardi said. "We shot the ball well when we needed to and I was very happy with the way we rebounded tonight. In the second half, we took better control of the ball, our zone defense was good to us and Zakee Boyd made some shots for us to put some separation in the game."
The first half was tight with five ties and four lead changes. The Raiders led by two at halftime and outscored the Titans 33-29 in the second half. Boyd turned a 32-30 lead into 41-32 lead with three straight three-point shots in a two minute span. The Raiders (8-7 overall, 3-1 HL) led by as many as 13 points (55-42) with 4:16 remaining and hit six of nine free throws in the final minutes to hold off the Titans (5-8, 2-1).
DaShaun Wood added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Drew Burleson and Zach Willams each scored 10 points in the win. The Raiders outrebounded the Titans 33-21 and shot 52 percent (22-42) from the field. It is the fourth straight game that Wright State has shot over 50 percent from the field. WSU hit 66 percent (14-22) from the foul line.
Brandon Cotton led the Titans with 13 points, while Torvoris Baker and James Thues each scored 11. Barker had seven rebounds for Detroit.
Wright State travels to Loyola Saturday for a 2 p.m. Horizon League game.
