Mike Winiecki is in his third year on the Wright State coaching staff.

Winiecki, a standout player at the University of Richmond, was on the UNC Wilmington staff while current WSU head coach Brad Brownell was also an assistant under Jerry Wainwright. He also held coaching positions with the Spiders as well as Boston University and Campbell University.

"Mike has always impressed me with his knowledge of the game and work ethic from our days together on the UNCW staff," Brownell said. "He was a tremendous college player who has the ability to teach post play to young players. Also, his experience in recruiting the Midwest and the east coast will enhance our program. His passion for the game will make the players and staff excited to work with him."

Winiecki began his coaching career in 1992 at Richmond, serving as a graduate assistant under head coach Dick Tarrant. Winiecki played professional basketball in Portugal before returning to the coaching ranks as an assistant coach at Richmond under head coach Bill Dooley for three seasons starting in 1994-95. He served a third stint as a Spider assistant coach under Wainwright beginning in 2002-03. Prior to his most recent return to UR, Winiecki spent four seasons as an assistant at UNC Wilmington under Wainwright. He also coached two seasons at Campbell University under head coach Billy Lee and was an assistant at Boston University under Dennis Wolff for two seasons before coming to Wright State.

A native of Buffalo, New York, Winiecki enjoyed a stellar collegiate career for the Spiders. He was a member of UR's 1986 and 1988 NCAA Tournament teams and was an All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) selection as a senior (1988-89), averaging 17.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. A member of Richmond's 1,000-point club, he finished his career with 1,031 points and more than 500 rebounds. He was a member of the storied 1988 Richmond team that, as the 13th seed, advanced to the NCAA's "Sweet Sixteen ." Along the way, the Spiders beat fourth-seeded Indiana and fifth-seeded Georgia Tech.

A graduate of Monacan High School in Richmond, Virginia, Winiecki was a Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star selection. In addition, he received All-Metro and All-State honors following his senior season, averaging 23.0 points and 11.4 rebounds.
