Sophomore Isaiah Kessio Has Paced the Raiders In the First Two Meets of the Season

Cross Country

9/6 - at Cedarville Friendship Invitational, 10:30 a.m.

            at John Bryant State Park (Yellow Springs, Ohio)

 

The Raiders each finished sixth at the Queen City Invitational hosted by Northern Kentucky University on September 6th. WSU’s men’s squad watched as ten runners posted career best times at the 5K distance and four runners posted personal bests on the women’s side.

Isaiah Kessio led the way for the Raiders men’s team, posting a 19th place finish with a time of 16:15. Jake McCubbin also went under the 17-minute mark crossing the finish line with a time of 16:58. Juniors Kurt Throckmorton and Kevin Sheehan joined rookie Randy Depoy as the other three scoring runners at the Queen City Invitational, all posting times under 18 minutes.


 

 

For the women’s squad, sophomore Natalie Hopwood placed 27th overall with a time of 20:01. The remainder of the field for the Green and Gold was made up of four freshman, all who posted PR times on the course in Alexandria, Ky. Bianca Walker placed 31st with a time of 20:13, while Kristen Goodwin was 44th and crossed the line in 21-minutes even. Ashley Diltz and Erin Cull rounded out the scoring for the Raiders.

 

 

Men’s Soccer (2008 Record: 1-5-0)

9/10 – vs. Alabama A&M, 5:00

 

            The Raiders picked up their first win of the season on Wednesday against IPFW in their home opener, before falling to SIU-Edwardsville on Friday. The Raiders will continue their homestand this weekend with one match against Alabama A&M.

            In their two matches last weekend, Braden Fleak tallied a pair of goals to match his total from the 2008 season. Fleak now has a team-high three markers this season. The junior now has 19 goals in his career and has moved within two goals of cracking the top-ten on WSU’s career goals scored list.

            Senior Josh Grossman picked up his 13th career assist against IPFW, when he sent a long pass ahead to Fleak for the first goal of the match. Adam Harp netted the only match-winner for the Raiders thus far in 2008. Harp flicked in a crossing pass from the senior Roger Downing to defeat the Mastodons on Wednesday,

             

 

Women’s Soccer (2008 Record: 4-3-0)

9/19 – vs. Dayton, 7:30

9/21 – vs. Duquesne, 1:00

 

The Raiders dropped a pair of heartbreakers on the road this past weekend, falling in overtime at UAB and then dropping a double-overtime match at Alabama. The Raiders had never lost an overtime match in the four seasons with head coach Pat Ferguson on campus and now own a record of 5-2-8 in overtime contests in the past four seasons.

The Green and Gold played 205 minutes of soccer on their roadtrip through the state of Alabama, falling 1-0 in extra sessions in each match. The Raiders took 18 shots against Alabama on Sunday and launched eight shots against UAB in their Friday match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Hackerson has not given up more than one goal in a match in the past five contests. She has posted 34 saves on the season and owns a goals against average of 1.37.

Wright State will play host to a pair of Atlantic-10 foes this weekend as they welcome cross town rival Dayton and Duquesne to Alumni Field for a quick two-match homestand.

 

Volleyball (2008 Record: 2-8)

9/19 – vs. Milwaukee, 7:00

9/20 – vs. Green Bay, 4:00

 

WSU won one of their three matches last weekend in the Raider Challenge, defeating Niagara in four, falling to Morehead State in four and pushing Florida State to the brink before dropping a five set match.

Senior middle blocker Lizzy Gunn was named to the All-Tournament squad after posting 28 kills and 14 blocking assists. Sophomore Shaunda Sandifer posted 23 kills, 13 blocking assists and one solo block in the three matches, while junior Lexi Leonhard totaled 28 kills and 57 digs for the tournament.

The Raiders will open up Horizon League play this weekend as they host league favorite Milwaukee on Friday evening and then take to the court against Green Bay on Saturday.
