Swimming and Diving Closing the Gap at Horizon League Championships

 BROWN DEER, Wis. – The Wright State swimming and diving teams continued competition at the 2009 Horizon League Championships, with the men’s team moving into second place and the women’s squad moving into third. Each team captured two individual victories on the day and the men’s team won the only relay contested on day three.

 

Nathan Demchuk broke his own school record in the 400 Individual Medley, winning the event in a time of 3:52.07. The swim was also a new Horizon League Championship record, besting the old mark 3:56.01 that stood since the 1997 league summit.

 

T.J. Collins won the 200 yard Freestyle on the men’s side of things in a time of 1:42.25 for the second Wright State event win of the day. Davynn Peffer placed third in the 100 yard Breaststroke and Scott Bey placed eighth in the 100 yard Backstroke final.


 

 

 

The men’s team closed out day three with a victory in the 800 yard Freestyle Relay by a slim margin over runner-up Green Bay. The team of LeRoux Pelser, Hermanus Botha, Danny Munoz and Demchuk set a new school and championship record with a time of 6:39.45.

 

Krystyna Wieczerzak set a new championship record in the 400 Individual Medley, winning the event by more than six second in a time of 4:20.85. In the process, the sophomore broke the school record in the event, besting the only mark of 4:23.23 by almost three second.

 

Molley Pipkorn won her second event of the championships when she out-touched the field in the 200 yard Freestyle. In the event, the sophomore set a new championship and school record with a time of 1:49.91.

 

Kim Martella finished runner-up in the 100 yard Breaststroke and Stevi DiMasso tenth in the 1-meter diving event. The 800 yard Freestyle Relay team placed second and was out-touched by .05-seconds by Green Bay.

 

The Championships will conclude on Saturday, February 28 with the league teams concluding their 2009 seasons.
