Points of Pride

Wright State University's Athletics Department, on behalf of student-athletes, coaches and staff members, is proud to acknowledge the following recent accomplishments:

  • Student-athletes attained a 3.0 overall academic average for the seventh consecutive year (21 straight quarters).

  • The athletics program was among the nation's leaders in percentage of athletes competing in women's sports during the 2003-04 school year according to the Chronicle of Higher Education. In accordance with Title IX requirements, Wright State achieved one of the best proportionality rates in the country.

  • The Raider Baseball team won the 2009 Horizon League Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Fort Worth Regional.

  • In the last four years, Wright State has made NCAA Tournament appearances in baseball (2008-09), men's basketball (2006-07) and softball (2006-07, 2007-08). Individually, track performers Tiffany Brigham (2007-08) and Cassandra Lloyd (2008-09) both qualified for the NCAA Regional meet.

  • The 2008-09 Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Awards, given to juniors or seniors with the highest grade point average, went to four juniors with GPAs of 4.0: Kyle Fetters (cross country/West Milton, OH) in environmental sciences, Kevin Sheehan (cross country/Huber Heights, OH) in biological sciences, Kurt Throckmorton (cross country/Tipp City, OH) in biological sciences and Tina Paunicka (volleyball/Champaign, IL) in mass communications.

  • Baseball pitcher Joe Smith was selected in the third round by the New York Mets in 2006 and made the Mets' opening day roster less than a year after pitching for the Raiders. Smith is currently on the big league roster for the Cleveland Indians.

  • Construction began and was completed on the men's and women's basketball pavilion, a state-of-the-art facility which will also house a 3,000 square foot weight room for all athletes and an eye training center. Fred Setzer and Bob Mills, who spearheaded the 3-million dollar fund raising effort for the building, were presented the annual Raider Award to recognize them for their contributions.

  • Swimmer Jessica Weidert was the 2007-08 female recipient of the Horizon League Cecil N. Coleman Medal of Honor. The Horizon League's highest individual honor, the Coleman Award is presented annually to the Horizon League's top male and female student-athletes who best exemplify the dignity and high purpose of the Horizon League and its membership. The individuals demonstrate outstanding achievement in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities. Weidert is the first Wright State female student-athlete ever to earn the Coleman Medal and just the second all-time for the university as baseball player Andy Matko received the men's honor in 1996-97.
