Wright State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Points of Pride for 2009-10

 

  • The Wright State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has now booked 22 straight quarters with an averaged GPA 3.0 or above.

  • The WSU baseball team won the 2010 regular-season Horizon League Title and advanced to its fourth Horizon League Tournament final in five years. WSU also posted a 2-1 win over then #1-ranked Virginia. Rob Cooper was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year.

  • The WSU men's basketball program posted its fourth straight 20-win season.

  • WSU finished fourth overall in the Horizon League McCafferty Trophy standings with baseball placing first and softball winning the tournament.

  • The Wright State women's soccer team finished with 10 wins or more for the sixth consecutive season. Patrick Ferguson was named the Horizon League co-Coach of the Year.

  • Former Raider standout Joe Smith completed second full season in the big leagues with the Cleveland Indians.

  • WSU basketball received national exposure by appearing on the ESPN Network four times in 2009-10.

  • Raider baseball coach Rob Cooper was named an assistant coach for USA Baseball for the third time this past summer. Casey McGrew became the second Raider ever to be selected to the USA Collegiate National Team.

  • The softball team won the Horizon League Tournament title and advanced to its third NCAA Tournament in four years. WSU defeated Illinois State in the NCAA Tournament.

  • Cassandra Lloyd again competed at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track Championships, finishing 18th in the 100 meter hurdles.

  • Cross country runners Kevin Sheehan, Ben Livingston and Kurt Throckmorton qualified to appear in the 2010 Boston Marathon in April.

  • Runners Kurt Throckmorton, Kevin Sheehan and Kyle Fetters as well as swimmer Ana Rubin and volleyball player Tina Paunicka posted perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs.

  • The men's tennis team finished with the nation's best winning percentage turn around while the women's squad posted the second best turn around in the entire country.

  • In early February, the WSU Athletic administrative staff made a visit to the Dayton Children's Hospital.

  • Wright State Athletics signed a multi-year partnership with Nike and Impact Sports to become the Raiders' supplier of athletic gear.

  • WSU Student-Athletes worked throughout the year with various groups such as Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity, as well as local grade schools and churches for academic and clinic purposes.
