Harris sets tournament RBI record in semifinal win over Oakland

DAYTONZane Harris drove in a tournament-record nine runs as the Wright State baseball program advanced to the Horizon League Championship title game with a 14-3 victory over No. 2 seed Oakland.

The Raiders (29-25, 20-9 HL) will face the winner of Oakland and No. 5 seed Youngstown State in the tournament's final round on Saturday, May 28, at noon.

WSU pounded out 15 hits in the win, highlighted by two doubles and four home runs. Harris batted 4-for-5 with a double, two homers, nine RBI, and three runs scored. The nine RBIs tied for the eighth-most by an individual in an NCAA Division I game this season. Alec Sayre went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI, while Sammy Sass batted 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBI. Jay Luikart contributed with a single and a solo homer in four at-bats.

Starting pitcher Sebastian Gongora (5-1) received the winning decision after limiting Oakland (30-26, 18-11 HL) to two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven batters in six innings. Chris Gallagher allowed a run on two hits in the subsequent two frames. Sam Wirsing retired the side in order in the ninth inning.

The Raiders started strong with two runs off a Harris double in the bottom of the first inning. Wright State extended its lead to 7-0 with five runs in the bottom of the third. Sayre and Gehrig Anglin drove in one run apiece on a hit in the scoring burst while Luikart and Harris homered.

WSU did not let go of its momentum, as Harris connected on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the lead to 9-0.

Oakland reached the scoreboard with two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Raiders responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the frame. Harris drilled a bases-clearing single to reach nine RBI on the day. Sass capped the scoring with a two-run homer, which was the fourth roundtrip of the game by the Raiders.

Leading 14-2, WSU allowed just one run over the last three innings to seal its second-straight tournament win.
