WSU defeats Oakland 80-75

The Wright State women's basketball team was up by as much as 22 points but fended off an Oakland attack as the Raiders won 80-75 over the Grizzlies Saturday night at the WSU Nutter Center.

Senior Chelsea Welch took control to post a double-double with 30 points and 11 rebounds along with five assists and two steals while fellow senior Lexi Smith added her own double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Junior Mackenzie Taylor pitched in 20 points as Emily Vogelpohl grabbed her 1,000th career point as she finished with nine points.

The Raiders are now 18-8, 9-5 while Oakland drops to 11-13, 4-9.

GAME SUMMARY

First Half Highlights

Welch had 10 points to pace the Raiders to a 37-25 lead after the first 20 minutes.
Smith nearly had her double-double with nine points and 11 boards.
The Raiders shot shot just 24% from the field, going 10-42 while outrebounding the Grizzlies 37-20.
Oakland shot 32% from the field.
Wright State led by 15 at 35-20 with 1:33 remaining in the first half.

Second Half Highlights

The Raiders grew a 22-point lead with 6:45 left in the third quarter at 49-27.
Oakland chipped the lead to just one point with 4:49 left in the game at 63-62.
Welch scored 20 more points and Taylor scored 12 mores.
WSU shot 56% in the final quarter to hold onto their lead.

Welch's 30 points were her highest since she scored 36 at #23 Missouri early in the season.
Oakland had the advantage 36-28 in the paint and 27-3 off the bench.
WSU led for nearly 37 minutes of the game.
The Raiders ended with 11 steals as Oakland had 16 turnovers.
WSU was helped as they scored 20 points from second chances.
