Fairborn, OH -- The Wright State men's soccer team played a pivotal Horizon League match Friday evening at Alumni Field against the Panthers of UW-Milwaukee. Each team entered the match with records of 2-0 in League play as the Panthers defeated the Raiders 2-1 in the physically played match.
The Panthers took a 1-0 advantage on a goal by Autou Jallow, Jallow took a bouncing rebound off the hand of Raider goalie Jason Balach and headed it into the net from five feet out. The Panthers went into half time with a 1-0 lead.
The second half saw action early as the Raiders tied the game as Paul-Anthony Perez netted his ninth goal of the season. Perez took a misplayed ball off the hands of Panthers goalie Kirk Thode and kicked the bouncing ball into the goal. The goal was set up from a fifty-yard free kick from Jonah Baskin. Baskin was given an assist on the Perez goal.
The Raiders lead was short lived as UWM netted the game-winning goal just three minutes after the equalizer by the Raiders. UWM's Dave Weiler put the Panthers back on top 2-1, assisted by Cliff Ellsworth.
The Raiders were out-shot 17-13 in the game. Also a combined 49 fouls were called, with 9 yellow cards divvied out to the two teams. Balach made four saves while facing the 17 shots from the Panther attack.
The Raiders are now 7-4, 2-1 HL, while the Panthers improve to 9-4, 3-0 HL after this match. The Raiders are next in action when Homecoming takes to WSU as a men's/women's double-header takes place on Sunday October 12th with the men taking on UW- Green Bay at Noon, followed by the women taking on Loyola.
