Athletics Announces 2012-13 Award Winners

The 2012-13 award winners for each Wright State team and for the athletic department were announced Thursday.

Baseball senior Garrett Gray was the recipient of the Don Mohr Male Athlete of the Year Award while women's basketball sophomore Kim Demmings was awarded the Peg Wynkoop Female Athlete of the Year Award and men's basketball coach Billy Donlon the Terry Hall Coach of the Year Award.

The Female recipient of the Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Award is Taylor Sarsgard from the women’s swimming team.  The Vandalia, OH native posted at grade point of 3.97 in early childhood education. 

The Male recipient of the Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Award is Dan Shafer from the men’s cross country team.  He recently led the team with the top times in each race, including a second overall finish at the 2013 Horizon League Meet early this month. The Painsville, OH native holds a grade point average of 3.96 in accountancy. 

Gray (Lewisburg, OH/Tri-County North) was named First Team All-Horizon League as he hit .328 with four home runs and 30 RBI.  He also had 13 doubles, 34 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.  Gray recorded 19 multi-hit game and seven multi-RBI games on the season as the Raiders advanced to the championship game of the league tournament.

Demmings (Richmond, IN/Richmond) was a Second Team All-Horizon League selection as she averaged 19.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.  She also added 130 assists and 38 steals.  Demmings became the second fastest Raider to reach the 1000 points plateau as she accomplished the milestone in her 54th game on January 31 against Valparaiso.

Donlon was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year as the Raiders finished 23-13 and 10-6 in the league despite being picked last in the preseason poll.  A finalist for the Skip Prosser and Hugh Durham Coach of the Awards, Donlon directed WSU to the Horizon League championship game and to the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational.

Donlon's selection marks the first time that a men's basketball coach has received the Terry Hall Coach of the Year Award since Brad Brownell was honored during the 2006-07 season.

Voting for the Athlete of the Year Awards is conducted by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee while the Coach of the Year Award is decided by a vote of Wright State's head coaches.
