Baseball Rolls Past Valparaiso
Release: Monday 03/22/2013
by WSU Athletic Media Relations

The Wright State baseball team scored five runs in the third inning and, behind the pitching of Casey Henn and Cody Kopilchack, rolled to a 7-2 win over Valparaiso Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.

The Crusaders scored an unearned run in the second and Valpo held that 1-0 lead until the Raiders sent 10 batters to the plate in that five-run third inning.  Justin Kopale led off with a hit up the middle and John Brodner advanced him to second with a bunt.  Singles by Mark Fowler and Michael Timm resulted in one run and Garrett Gray followed with a triple to right center to plate Fowler and Timm and make it 3-1.

Kieston Greene drove in Gray with a hit to right and after Cody Gardner was hit by a pitch and Jeff Limbaugh singled to load the bases, a Beau Phillips sacrifice fly to left extended the margin to 5-1.

WSU tacked on two more runs in the fifth to make it 7-1.  Greene started the inning with a double to left center and the Raiders loaded the bases as Gardner reached on an error and Limbaugh was hit by a pitch.  A sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Kopale drove in Greene and Gardner scored as Brodner reached on an infield hit.

Valparaiso (8-12, 0-1 Horizon) scored a run in the seventh, but would get no closer as Henn (3-3) picked up the win for the Raiders, striking out seven in 7.1 innings.  Kopilchack struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to close it out.

Offensively, Gray and Greene each had three hits to lead WSU, while Brodner had two.

Wright State (7-11, 2-2 Horizon) closes out the series with Valpo Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 1:00.
