A Sean Murphy home run with two outs in the bottom of the 12th lifted the baseball team to a 1-0 win over Valparaiso on Senior Day Sunday at Nischwitz Stadium.
Opportunities for both teams were limited throughout the game as the Crusaders managed just one hit through the first eight innings and the Raiders had five.
In the ninth, Valpo had two reach on walks with one out, but an interference call on a grounder resulted in a double play. The Crusaders then had runners on first and third with one out in the 10th and appeared to have broken the scoreless deadlock with an infield hit, but the play was ruled a foul ball and WSU pitcher Taylor Braun escaped the threat with a strikeout and a fly out.
The bottom of the 12th looked to be another scoreless frame as the first two batters were retired on a pop out and a strike out. Murphy, however, changed all that with a swing on a 1-0 pitch, driving it over the fence for his fourth home run of the season and the game-winner.
Andrew Elliott (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Overall the Raider bullpen of Jack Van Horn, E.J. Trapino and Braun pitched eight innings of scoreless relief with eight strikeouts after starter Robby Sexton went the first four innings, fanning four.
Wright State (31-19, 23-3 Horizon) now heads to Wisconsin the next two weekends, starting with a three-game series in Milwaukee to close out the regular season. The series starts on Thursday at 5:00 Eastern, with the game to be played at Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers.
