The Wright State baseball team improved to 5-0 in the Horizon League Saturday with a 2-0 win over Oakland at Nischwitz Stadium.
For the first seven innings, Raider starter Joey Hoelzel and Golden Grizzly starter Tim Koons were hooked up in quite a pitcher's duel, both pitching shutout baseball. Hoelzel limited Oakland to three hits and a walk while striking out one while Koons held WSU to five hits and a walk while fanning nine.
Taylor Braun (2-1) escaped an Oakland threat in the eighth, keeping the game scoreless until Wright State scored their two runs in the bottom of the frame. Brad Macciocchi led off with a double down the left field line and scored as Joe Ford singled through the left side of the infield.
Ford went to second as the Golden Grizzlies tried to retired Macciocchi at home and then advanced to third on an Andrew McCafferty ground out. Michael Timm then squeezed in Ford for the second run.
Andrew Elliott came on for the Raiders in the ninth and picked up his fourth save of the year as he allowed a walk but retired the other three batters he faced.
Wright State (11-10, 5-0 Horizon) looks to complete the series sweep with the final game Sunday at 1:00.
