The Wright State baseball team claimed its first Joe Nuxhall Classic title and extended its winning streak to 12 Wednesday night with a 2-1 win over Miami at McKie Field in Oxford.
The Raiders opened the scoring with a run in the third. Jake Hibberd led off with a hit down the right field line and, after advancing to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a Corey Davis sacrifice bunt. Tristan Moore followed with a double down the right field line to drive in Hibberd.
Miami (17-16), though, tied it with an unearned run in the bottom of the third and it stayed 1-1 until the ninth despite WSU loading the bases in the fifth and the RedHawks having two runners on in the seventh.
In the ninth, Sam Picchiotti doubled to left center with one out and moved up to third as the center fielder bobbled the ball. After a Kyle Mossbarger walk, Hibberd delivered the game-winner, a single to right center.
It was then left to Jordan Marker (4-1), who wrapped the win in relief by retiring Miami in order in the ninth, the final two on strikeouts. Marker went the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Travis Hissong added four strikeouts in 2.1 innings as the Raider staff, which fanned 14 in the win over Cincinnati on Tuesday, added 11 more on Wednesday.
Hibberd and Moore each had two hits and a RBI in the contest with Picchiotti and Mossbarger picking up the other two hits. Moore was named the Classic's MVP as he went three for eight with two doubles and a RBI in the two games.
Wright State (21-10), now winners of 12 straight and 15 of its last 16, returns to Horizon League play this weekend with a three-game series against Milwaukee at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders and Panthers open the series with a 6:30 game Friday, followed by a 2:00 contest on Saturday and 1:00 on Sunday.
