Down 12-6 and 14-13 in the fifth set, the Wright State volleyball team rallied back for a Horizon League win at Loyola Friday night. The Raiders won the match 27-25, 21-25, 25-17, 21-25, 16-14.
The opening set featured 10 ties and three lead changes, with the final tie and lead change coming at the end as the Raiders scored the final two points on kills by Alaina McAuley and Aimee Schubert.
WSU went up 20-19 in the second set following a Rambler attack error, only to see Loyola close out the set with a 5-1 run, three coming on a pair of kills and a block from Laura Purcell.
Three straight points broke an 8-8 deadlock in the third set as Wright State went on to the win, but Loyola forced the Raiders into a fifth set for the first time this season by overcoming a 17-16 deficit with three straight points to go ahead to stay.
WSU trailed 12-5 in the final set before scoring eight straight points to regain the lead. A Styler kill and block put Loyola up 14-13, only to see the Raiders tally the last three points to win the match. A Dani Branco kill tied it and after a block from Branco and Ashley Langjahr, an ace by McAuley closed it out.
Overall, the match was tied 45 times and had 23 lead changes. Wright State finished with a 63-57 kill advantage and outhit the Ramblers .230-.168.
Four Raiders recorded double figures in kills as Branco had 14 in hitting .407, Heidi Splinter a double-double of 13 kills and 11 digs, McAuley 13 kills and five block assists and Langjahr 12 kills and eight block assists. Jessica Levy added 15 digs.
Wright State (5-22, 4-10 Horizon) heads to Green Bay Saturday for its final regular-season road match of the season, starting at 3:00 Eastern.
