For the second time in three months, junior first baseman/designated player Colleen Schneider of the Wright State softball team has been selected as the Horizon League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for May, it was announced Monday by the league office.
Schneider (Centerville, OH/Centerville), who received the same honor from the league in March, was this year's female recipient of WSU's Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to the junior or senior athlete with the highest grade point average. She currently holds a 3.937 GPA in mechanical engineering.
Last month, Schneider was named as a Capital One Third Team Academic All-American as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She became the 17th Wright State athlete ever to be named as an Academic All-American and just the second softball player, joining Maria (Barhorst) Davis, who also received the same Third Team honor in 2001.
On the field, Schneider hit .292 in 47 games this season with three home runs and 19 RBI. She also scored 16 runs as she was tied for second on the team with two triples and was third in fielding putouts with 187.
