Wright State led 6-2 after four innings, but it was all Valparaiso the rest of the way as the Crusaders scored the final six runs of the contest for an 8-6 Horizon League win Thursday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.
The Raiders came out strong, scoring three times in the first. Hits by Kristi Boreing, China Frost and Kacie Rapshus loaded the bases and, one out later, a walk to Chelsea Archer forced in the first run. A fielder's choice play off the bat of Michelle Baker resulted in an error and another run and a Colleen Schneider ground out plated Kortney Tackett with the third run.
Valparaiso (25-10, 9-0 Horizon) scored a run in the top of the third, only to see WSU answer right back as Archer drove the first pitch of the bottom of the inning over the fence in left center for her second home run of the season and a 4-1 lead.
The Crusaders again tallied a run in the fourth and, again, Wright State had an answer, this time two runs. Following a Rapshus walk and a Tackett single, Archer had a hit through the right side of the infield to drive in Rapshus and Tackett scored on Baker's single to center.
Valparaiso, however, exploded for five runs in the fifth, including a three-run home run to left center by Joylyn Ichiyama-Drewry, and added an insurance run in the sixth on a RBI single from Brittany Duncan.
Archer had two hits and three RBI to pace the Raider offense while Angie Clark also had two hits and Rapshus and Tackett both scored twice.
Wright State (17-23, 5-7 Horizon) is now off until beginning a three-game series at Butler with a 3:00 doubleheader on Tuesday.
