Freshman Ryan Weiss of the Wright State baseball team has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 20, it was announced Monday by the league office.
Weiss (Suth Elgin, IL/South Elgin) picked up the win in the middle game of the UIC series Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium. After giving up a two-run home run in the first, he did not allow another run during his six-inning outing. Weiss struck out five and gave up three hits and three walks.
For the season, Weiss leads the league with a 2.09 earned run average and is third in strikeouts (74), fourth in wins (7), fifth in opposing batting average (.232) and seventh in innings pitched (81.2). In league play, he is tied for first in strikeouts (53), tied for second in wins (5), third in ERA (2.34), tied for fourth in innings pitched (57.2) and fifth in opposing batting average (.230).
Weiss' selection marks the fifth time that a Raider has earned Pitcher of the Week honors this season as Danny Sexton (February 20, March 27) and Zane Collins (March 6, March 20) each received it twice.
Wright State (36-19, 21-9 Horizon) is the #2 seed for this week's Horizon League Tournament, which will take place at Granderson Stadium on the UIC campus. The Raiders will face the highest remaining seed after Wednesday's first-round games--either #3 Northern Kentucky, #4 Valparaiso or #5 Oakland--at 4:00 Eastern on Thursday, May 25.
The tournament continues through Saturday with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament next week.
