The Wright State baseball team saw a lead slip away in the top of the ninth, only to put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning to record a 5-4 walk-off win over Dayton Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second. With one out, Adrian Marquez doubled down the right field line and advanced to third on a Cory Heffron hit through the left side of the infield. One out later, Nick Weybright walked to load the bases and Matt Morrow followed with a hard comebacker off the foot of the pitcher for a hit to drive in Marquez. Zach Weatherford was then hit by a pitch to force in Heffron with the second run.
The Flyers, however, answered with a run in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 3-2 advantage, a lead they would hold until the Raiders went back in front in the bottom of the sixth. Seth Gray reached on an error to start the frame and scored as Marquez tripled to the gap in right center. A later infield single by Weybright brought home the second run.
UD pushed across a run in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 4-4 and it appeared headed to extra innings as the first two Wright State batters struck out in the bottom of the ninth. Morrow, though, started the winning rally with a walk and after Weatherford singled through the left side, JD Orr won a nine-pitch battle with a full count walk.
That brought Gabe Snyder to the plate and he walked on five pitches to bring in Morrow with the winning run.
Derek Hendrixson (3-1) picked up the win after striking out two in the ninth. Jorge Lozano pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out three.
At the plate, Morrow and Marquez each had two hits.
Wright State (33-15) hits the road for a pair of key Horizon League doubleheaders this weekend, taking on Milwaukee on Friday, May 12, and UIC on Saturday, May 13, with both starting at 1:00 Eastern.
