by WSU Athletic Media Relations

The Wright State track team will compete in the 2017 Horizon League Track & Field Outdoor Championships held at Farmers National Bank Field on the campus of Youngstown State University on May 5-7.

The Raiders are led by senior Alexandra Brown (Yellow Springs, OH), who established new school records in the 1500 meter run, 3000 meter run, and 5000 meter run. She was the 3000 meter run champion at the Horizon League Indoor Championships in February and was selected as the Wright State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's Athlete of the Month on March 9.

“It is nothing short of unbelievable what Alex has accomplished in her senior year,” WSU head coach Rick Williamson said, “but make no mistake, she has worked extremely diligently over the last four years and is now putting all the pieces together."

WSU will also look for help from sophomore Brooklyn Mikesell (Miamisburg, OH), who has the team's best times in the 100 meter hurdles (15.31) and 400 meter hurdles (1:03.29) this season. Wright State will also turn to freshman Iman Salhieh (Springfield, OH), who has the two fastest times in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash.

In the field events, sophomore Maria Heckman (Minster, OH) broke her own school record in the pole vault at the RedHawk Invitational on April 29 with a clearance of 3.80 meters. The Raiders will also turn to junior Katie Abrahamowicz (Beavercreek, OH), who had a season's best 11.41m in the triple jump and 5.44m in the long jump on March 25 at the Yellow Jacket Open. Senior Gabrielle Markley (Beavercreek, OH) has recorded marks of 10.36m in the shot put and 26.58m in the javelin throw.

On Monday, the league office announced that five members of the team were named Academic All-League, the most by any school. Brown, who is making her second appearance of the year on an Academic All-League Team (cross country) and holds a 3.78 GPA in Biological Sciences. Markley, who was selected to the Indoor Academic All-League Team earlier in the year, majors in Sports Science and holds a 4.00 GPA. Abrahamowicz, a Psychology major, holds a 3.94 GPA and makes her second appearance of the season on an Academic All-League Team. Hailey Brumfield (Tipp City, OH), also making her second appearance on the Academic All-League Team, holds a 3.80 GPA in Sports Science. Also Heckman, majoring in Finance, holds a 4.00 GPA and is making her second Academic All-League Team of the season (Indoor Track).
