Wenzler, Sipe Honored by Horizon League
Release: Monday 04/22/2017
by WSU Athletic Media Relations

Wright State seniors Ryan Wenzler and Austin Sipe were recognized as the Horizon League announced its golf postseason awards Saturday night.  Wenzler was voted Co-Player of the Year and to the First Team while Sipe was chosen to the Second Team.

Wenzler (Centerville, OH/Centerville), the fourth WSU golfer to be honored as a Player of the Year, was also named All-League in 2015 and 2016.   He was named the Horizon League Player of the Week on March 22 as he placed third overall at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate.  Wenzler also finished third at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in the fall along with three other top ten finishes over eight tournaments.  His best round of 66 came at Marshall.

Wenzler won the Horizon League individual championship last year and played in the 2016 NCAA Golf Regional Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee, in June.

"Ryan has worked hard all year and deserves the conference player of the year honor," WSU head coach Pete Samborsky said.  "He spends hours working on his game, and it shows in his performance."

"He worked hard since his freshman year and, being named all conference three years in a row, it shows what the other league coaches think of his game."

Sipe (Centerville, OH/Centerville) shot a season-best 68 at Marshall and at the Cleveland State Invitational while his highest finishes came at the Crusader Collegiate and the Wright State Invitational with 11th place finishes.

"Austin has been a contributor to this team since his freshman year, so it's nice to see him rewarded by being named to the all-conference team.  He deserves the honor for all his hard work."

The opening round of the Horizon League Championships is set for Sunday at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.  The three-round tournament concludes on Tuesday with the team winner and overall individual champion receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
