The Wright State golf team will compete in the 2017 Horizon League Championship at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida on April 23-25. After a practice round on Saturday, the Raiders will play 18 holes each day.
Senior Ryan Wenzler (Centerville, OH) was named Horizon League Golfer of the Week on March 22, after shooting 74-67-68=208 at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tennessee. He has the two lowest rounds of the season, 67 (-5) at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate and the Yestingsmeier Invitational and 66 (-4) at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational. He currently has five top five and five top-10 finishes on the season. The Raiders will also look for help from fellow senior Austin Sipe (Centerville, OH), who has finished third for Wright State in each of the last four tournaments.
Other Raiders to watch for include junior Chris Rossi (Fairfield, OH), who ranks third in scoring average (74.78) for the Raiders this season behind only Wenzler and Sipe. Freshmen Austin Schoonmaker (Springboro, OH) rounds out the five playing next week as he posted a two under final at the Cleveland State Invitational, including his career-low round of 68.
"I feel the five players we are sending to the conference championship to represent WSU is our best mix to help us bring home a championship," head coach Pete Samborsky said. "The guys are play well together, and the chemistry is outstanding. With that mix, it is a positive atmosphere, and they can count on each other. I'm excited to see what we can do in Florida."
Wright State placed third overall at last year’s event as Wenzler won the overall individual honors and represented the Horizon League in the NCAA Regional in Nashville, Tennessee. Cody Nickson placed eighth overall last year for the Raiders.
