Freshman third baseman Seth Gray of the Wright State baseball team has been selected as the Horizon League Batter of the Week for the week ending April 16, it was announced Monday by the league office.
Gray (Springfield, OH/Shawnee) hit .722 (13 for 18) in four games last week, including a double and a home run, and had seven RBI, five runs scored and three stolen bases. In an 8-7 win over Xavier on April 11 at Nischwitz Stadium, he was a perfect four-for-four at the plate with a RBI and a run scored.
In the first game of a three-game home series against UT Martin on April 13, Gray was two-for-four with two stolen bases, a RBI and a run scored as the Raiders won 14-0. He followed that with a four-for-five effort in the second game on April 14 with a solo home run, a double, three RBI and two runs scored. He hit a leadoff double in the 11th inning and scored the winning run as WSU won 4-3.
Gray closed out the week by going three-for-five with two RBI, a stolen base and a run scored on April 15 as Wright State completed the series sweep over UT Martin with a 12-5 victory.
On the season, Gray's 48 hits are most in the Horizon League, his .366 batting average is second and his 26 runs scored are tied for sixth. Currently on a 13-game hitting streak, the longest by any Raider so far this season, he has had 16 multi-hit games in 2017.
Wright State (25-8, 11-1 Horizon) has a busy week ahead, starting with the Joe Nuxhall Classic at Marge Schott Stadium on the University of Cincinnati campus Tuesday and Wednesday, April 18-19. The Raiders face Miami in the opening round at 3:00 on Tuesday and will take either Cincinnati or Xavier on Wednesday at a time to be determined by Tuesday's results.
WSU then returns to Horizon League play on Saturday, April 22, with a home doubleheader against Oakland at 1:00, followed by a twinbill at Valparaiso on Sunday, April 23, starting at 1:00 Eastern time.
