A five-run eighth inning lifted the Wright State baseball team to an 8-7 victory over Xavier Tuesday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Musketeers scored a run in the first, only to see the Raiders answer with three runs in their half of the inning. Matt Morrow led off with a hit up the middle and, one out later, Adrian Marquez tripled to left center to tie the game. Gabe Snyder then followed that with a two-run home run to right center, his fifth of the season, to make it 3-1.
Xavier, however, went in front 5-3 on a Joe Gellenbeck grand slam in the fourth and added single runs in the sixth and eighth to go up 7-3.
After scoring three runs on four hits in the opening frame, the WSU offense was held scoreless over the next seven innings on just two hits, both by Seth Gray.
The eighth, though, was a different story, starting with a short single to left by Morrow. After Orr walked, Marquez plated both with a double down the right field line. Marquez advanced to third on a Snyder ground out and scored on Gray's hit up the middle to make it 7-6.
After a Cory Heffron infield hit and a wild pitch put two runners into scoring position, Alex Alders hit a chopper that the third baseman threw high and past the first baseman, allowing Gray and Heffron to score and give Wright State the lead at 8-7.
Derek Hendrixson walked two batters in the ninth, but escaped the jam to record his sixth save of the year. Chris Rodriguez (1-0) picked up the win as he struck out six in 2.2 innings of work.
At the plate, Gray finished a perfect four-for-four while Marquez had two hits, three RBI and two run scored, Morrow two hits and Orr two runs scored.
Wright State (22-8) hosts UT Martin in a three-game series this weekend at Nischwitz Stadium, starting with a single game Thursday at 6:30.
