The Wright State baseball team prevailed in a 2-1 pitcher's duel over Valparaiso in the Horizon League opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.
WSU opened the scoring in the second as Matt Morrow singled, stole second and scored on a two-out triple to right center off the bat of Alex Alders.
The Crusaders, though, tied the game with a two-out run of their own in the fifth and it stayed that way until the Raiders came up with the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth. Zach Weatherford doubled off the fence in left center and moved up to third on a JD Orr groundout. Morrow followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Weatherford.
Both starting pitchers were dominant on the day as Raider starter Danny Sexton scattered seven hits and a walk in a complete-game effort, striking out five as he threw 92 pitches, 70 for strikes. Valparaiso starter Mario Losi allowed a run on five hits and two walks in seven innings, striking out two.
Alders paced the WSU offense with two hits.
Wright State (10-6, 1-0 Horizon) and Valparaiso (6-9, 0-1 Horizon) close out the weekend series with a doubleheader Sunday starting at 11 am.
