Baseball Plays at Kentucky, then Opens at Home

The Wright State baseball team, coming off a successful two weeks in the Carolinas, will play at the SEC’s Kentucky Tuesday before hosting a few games finally this weekend.

The Raiders will travel to Lexington Tuesday for a 4 pm game before hosting Western Illinois Friday at 4 pm and a doubleheader at 1 pm Saturday against Ohio.  On Sunday, the Raiders will play at Dayton at 2 pm.

Pitcher of the Week:  Sophomore lefthander Zane Collins of the Wright State baseball team has been named as the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 5.  Collins (West Mansfield, OH/Benjamin Logan) threw seven shutout innings in a start Saturday at Wofford, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven as the Raiders won 3-0.

Raiders: Wright State, 7-4 overall, went 4-1 last week with a four-game winning streak, including wins against USC Upstate, Wofford and Pittsburgh.

On Sunday, junior lefthander Danny Sexton ran his record to 3-0 with eight strong innings in the Raiders win against Pittsburgh.  Sexton allowed only three hits and one earned run along with five strikeouts and just one walk.

WSU catcher Brandon Giltrow picked up two RBI on two hits, including a double.  Outfielder Zach Weatherford also drove in the other Wright State run on a double.  Gabe Snyder, Daniel Arthur and Kevin Whatley also picked up hits for the Raiders.

Opponents: Kentucky will enter Tuesday’s game with a 7-5 record at Cliff Hagen Stadium.  UK is coming off a 12-1 win over UC Santa Barbara as Kentucky’s Justin Lewis pitched seven perfect innings.

Western Illinois is winless in 10 games this year while Ohio is currently 7-5, coming off two wins at Western Kentucky over the weekend.  Dayton holds a 3-6 record in the early part of the season, coming off an 11-2 loss to Maryland.

Next Up: The Raiders will host Cincinnati next Tuesday and Horizon League foe Valparaiso March 17-19.
