Co-Champs Get Ready for Tournament

Horizon League Co-Champions, the #2 seeded Wright State women’s basketball team will play the winner of #7 Northern Kentucky/#10 UIC Sunday at 2:30 in the second round of the league tournament at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Follow the Raiders: The games will be shown on ESPN3 live with the championship shown on ESPNU.

Wright State: The Raiders, now 23-7 and 15-3, clinched its first regular season title of any kind with a 62-52 win over Milwaukee last Sunday.  It is the fourth straight year that the Raiders have won at least 20 games.  15 league wins sets a new record for most wins by WSU women’s basketball.  The previous record was 12.

Katrina Merriweather was named the league Coach of the Year while junior Chelsea Welch was selected to the first team. 

With a win, WSU will play in the semifinals Monday at 3:30 pm as they championship game is slated for Tuesday at Noon.  Green Bay, also 2017 Co-Champions, won the tournament the last two years as the Raiders won in 2014 to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Three Raiders average in double figures: Chelsea Welch (18.7), Lexi Smith (12.8), Emily Vogelpohl (10.8).  Symone Simmons (9.2) and Smith (8.8) lead the Raiders in rebounding.  Simmons is at 9.8 points per game while Mackenzie Taylor sits at 9.8.

Tournament Past: The Raiders have appeared in four Horizon League Championship games, winning 2014 at Green Bay.  The other years were 2005, 2008 and 2015.

Last Time Out: The Raiders beat Milwaukee 62-52 at home Sunday to clinch the Co-Championship.  Smith led all scorers with 21 points while Emily Vogelpohl had 13 points, Welch 12 and Taylor 11 for WSU.

Wright State shot 44 percent for the contest, 56 percent in the second half, while Milwaukee shot 39 percent overall, 33 percent after halftime.

The Tournament: The Raiders went 4-0 against NKU (9-21, 5-13) and UIC (5-24, 2-16) this season, winning twice at home and twice on the road.  If WSU wins, the Raiders will play the winner of #3 Detroit Mercy and #6 Cleveland State Monday at 3:30.  The championship will be Tuesday at Noon.
