Softball Shuts Out Valparaiso to Claim Series
Release: Monday 04/27/2014
by WSU Athletic Media Relations

Senior Krystian DeWitt threw a five-hit shutout and fellow senior Kacie Rapshus homered and scored twice as Wright State claimed the series with a 3-0 win over Valparaiso Sunday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.

After DeWitt pitched out of a two-on, one-out jam in the top of the second, the Raiders took the lead early with two runs in the bottom of the frame.  With one out, Becka Peterson dropped a single into center field and pinch-runner Rachael Oakley went to third as Rapshus doubled to straight away center.  One out later, Hanna Floyd smacked a two-run double to left center to plate both Oakley and Rapshus.

Rapshus then made it 3-0 in the fourth as she drove an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left for her first home run of the season.

Valparaiso posed a threat in the sixth as the Crusaders loaded the bases with one out, but again DeWitt preserved the shutout with a strikeout and a ground out.  She then retired the side in order in the seventh to complete her third shutout of the season and 10th of her career.  DeWitt finished with six strikeouts and one walk.

Offensively, Rapshus had two hits and two runs scored while Floyd also had two hits and two RBI.

Wright State (15-28, 10-6 Horizon) heads to IUPUI for a Wednesday doubleheader starting at 4:00 before hosting Cleveland State in a three-game Horizon League series to close out the regular season next weekend.
