Softball Splits With Marshall

Wright State split a doubleheader with Marshall Wednesday at the WSU Softball Field, the Raiders taking the opener 3-2 before the Thundering Herd won the nightcap 7-4.

Jess Gorman gave WSU a quick 1-0 lead in the first game as she led off the bottom of the first with a home run just to the left of center field.  The junior centerfielder struck again in the third with another solo shot, this time to left center, to make it 2-0.  Gorman now has seven home runs on the season.

Marshall came back and tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, only to see Wright State come up with what turned out to be the game-winning run in its half of the inning.  Kacie Rapshus led off with a walk and pinch-runner Rachael Oakley advanced to second on a Hanna Floyd sacrifice bunt.  After Kortney Tackett reached first on a fielder's choice, she stole second and Oakley scored as no one covered second as the catcher tried to throw out Tackett.

The Thundering Herd had two runners on in both the sixth and seventh, but Krystian DeWitt (7-10) pitched out of both threats to preserve the victory.  The senior righty allowed just four hits in a complete-game effort while striking out eight.

Offensively, Floyd had two hits to go along with Gorman's two home runs.

In the second game, Marshall scored an unearned run in each of the first three innings to lead 3-1 despite Tackett having an RBI single in the second.  The Herd added two runs in the fifth and seventh to round out their scoring.

WSU scored a run in the sixth as Floyd singled in Becka Peterson, who had a one-out triple, and added two more in the seventh as Gorman and Reagan Stofcheck had back-to-back doubles and Peterson had a run-scoring single, but could get no closer.

Peterson led the Raider offense with three hits while Stofcheck and Floyd had two each.

Wright State (11-26) heads to Youngstown State for a three-game Horizon League series starting with a doubleheder Friday at 3:00.
