The Wright State baseball team tied the score with a run in the top of the sixth, only to see host Long Beach State take the lead for good with two in the bottom of the sixth and add another in the eighth for a 4-1 decision Saturday at Blair Field.
Long Beach State scored an unearned run in the second and it stayed that way until the Raiders tied it in the sixth. With one out, Michael Timm singled to center and advanced to third on a John Brodner hit to right center. Sean Murphy followed with an infield hit to third to plate Timm with the tying run and WSU later loaded the bases on another infield hit, this time by Cody Simon, but left them stranded.
The Dirtbags, though, quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back triples to start the frames produced one run and, after a walk, a single made it 3-1.
Long Beach State then added an insurance run on a squeeze bunt in the eighth to round out the scoring.
WSU starting pitcher Joey Hoelzel (1-1) went six innings, scattering six hits and a walk in allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts. Offensively, Joe Ford led the way with two hits.
Wright State (2-3) wraps up the California trip with another game in Long Beach on Sunday, this time against Arizona State at 4:00 Eastern time.
