by WSU Athletic Media Relations
For the second straight month, senior Dan Shafer of the men's cross country team has been selected as the Horizon League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October, it was announced Wednesday by the league office.

Shafer (Painesville, OH/Riverside) was the 2012-13 male recipient of WSU's Dr. Carl Benner Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to the junior or senior athlete with the highest grade point average.  He currently holds a 3.96 GPA in accountancy.

Shafer has been the top finisher for the Raiders in all six races so far this season.  After finishing 16th at the All-Ohio Championships in Cedarville on October 4 and second at the Wilmington Fall Classic on October 18, Shafer earned First Team All-League honors as he placed second at the league meet November 2 in Boardman, Ohio with a time of 25:50 in the 8K race.

The second-place finish for Shafer was the highest-ever by a Raider at the league meet and he along with junior Matt Peters became the first two WSU runners to receive First Team All-League honors since Cory Scheadler did so in 2003.  The Wright State men finished third as a team, their highest since also finishing third in 2000.

An Academic All-Horizon League selection in 2011-12 and 2012-13, Shafer has appeared on both the Horizon League and Wright State honor rolls.

Wright State competes Friday at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wisconsin.
