The Wright State baseball team could not overcome a 5-0 deficit as Youngstown State added two insurance runs in the eighth for a 7-4 decision in the final game of the series Sunday in Niles, Ohio.
YSU scored a run in the fourth and added four more in the fifth, including a Jake Kucek two-run single, in building a 5-0 lead.
The Raiders cut into the deficit with three in the top of the sixth. After Justin Kopale walked and Sam Picchiotti doubled, a John Brodner hit to left center plated Kopale with the first run. Garrett Gray was later hit by a pitch to load the bases and Michael Timm followed with a two-run single to right center.
WSU closed to within one run in the seventh as Kopale tripled to center and came in on a Picchiotti sacrifice fly to right, but could get no closer as the Penguins added two runs in the eighth to round out the scoring.
Timm and Picchiotti each had two hits for Wright State (20-23, 8-10 Horizon), who returns to action Monday with a 6:30 contest against Toledo at Nischwitz Stadium.
