A grand slam by Tiffany Ricks in the sixth proved to be the difference as Dayton recorded a 4-0 win over Wright State Wednesday night at the WSU Softball Field.
Pitchers Montana Wear of WSU and Emily Froment of UD hooked up in a scoreless pitcher's duel until the Flyers broke the deadlock with the four-run sixth. Natalie Mariano led off with a hit to left and went to second as Kathleen Maloof reached on an error. Another error loaded the bases for Ricks, who drove a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right for her fourth home run of the season.
Froment (5-1) earned the win as she scattered six hits while striking out four. Wear (3-12) struck out five in five-plus innings of work.
Mariano and Ricks had two hits for Dayton (16-15) while Angie Clark and Kacie Rapshus did the same for the Raiders.
Wright State (7-25) was scheduled to travel to Green Bay this weekend for a three-game Horizon League series, but the series will now be played at WSU due to poor weather and field conditions in Green Bay. The Raiders and Phoenix will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 13, at 2:00 followed by a single game on Sunday, April 14, at 11:00.
