For the fourth time at the Woo Pig Classic, the Wright State softball team came up a run short as Northern Iowa scored in the bottom of seventh to pull out a 1-0 decision Sunday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The Raiders posed threats to score in each of the first four innings, but left runners on the corners in the first, two in scoring position in the second and fourth and a runner on third in the third. WSU then had another threat in the seventh as pinch-hitter Alex Machen singled and went to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded there.
Northern Iowa then scored the winner in the bottom of the seventh. Gina Brown reached on an error, but was thrown out at third as Nicole Fisher singled to right and advanced to second on the play. Samantha Reimer, though, doubled to right on the first pitch to drive in Fisher with the winning run.
It was the second one-run loss to Northern Iowa in the tournament, the other being a 2-1 decision on Saturday, and the fourth overall on the weekend as WSU dropped a pair of 4-3 games to Jacksonville State on Friday and Saturday.
Wright State (2-13) is off until competing at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Indiana, March 16-17, taking on Michigan State, Central Michigan and host Indiana.
