Baseball Opens Season With Two Wins
Release: Tuesday 02/15/2013
by WSU Athletic Media Relations

The Wright State baseball team opened the season Friday with two wins at the Ron Fraser Classic in Cary, North Carolina, defeating Temple 8-3 and La Salle 9-5.

The Raiders scored early and often in the win over Temple, starting with three runs in the second.  Mark Fowler was hit by a pitch to start the frame and after stealing second, he went to third on a Cody Gardner bunt single.  A Justin Kopale sacrifice fly made it 1-0 and following a John Brodner walk, Beau Phillips shot a double the opposite way into left center to drive in Gardner.  Michael Timm then grounded out to plate Brodner with the third run.

The lead grew to 5-0 in the third as Brodner and Phillips walked with the bases loaded.  After Jeff Limbaugh singled in a run in the fourth, the margin grew to 8-0 an inning later on a RBI single from Sam Picchiotti and a Garrett Gray sacrifice fly.

That would be all Casey Henn (1-0) would need as the senior righthander, in his first appearance since 2011 due to Tommy John surgery, threw six shutout innings, allowiing just three hits and a walk while striking out three.

Temple would hit three solo home runs over the final two innings, but would get no closer.

Limbaugh, Fowler, Gardner and Phillips each had two hits in their WSU debuts, with Fowler scoring twice.

Wright State again took the early lead against La Salle with a run in the second on a Gardner RBI single, but the Explorers tied it with a run in the third.

The Raiders went back in front with a run in the fourth on a Gardner sacrifice fly and two more in the fifth as Picchiotti smacked a two-run home run to left, only to see La Salle tie the score again at 4-4 with three in the top of the sixth.

WSU, though, went in front to stay with three in its half of the sixth.  Jason DeFevers tripled in Fowler with the first run and later scored on a Phillips squeeze bunt.  Kopale then followed with a solo homer to left center to make it 7-4.

Wright State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and those turned out to be key as La Salle loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth.  Travis Hissong, however, recorded a strikeout and induced a double play to end the game.

Picchiotti and DeFevers each had two hits while Limbaugh scored three times.

The two wins gives the Raiders their first 2-0 start to a season since winning the first two games of a series at Western Carolina to begin the 1995 campaign.

Wright State (2-0) continues play at the Fraser Classic Saturday, taking on Albany at 11:30.
