Softball Drops 2-1 Heartbreaker to McNeese State

The Wright State softball team was two outs away from its first victory of the season before a two-run home run off the bat of Marissa Koetting gave McNeese State a 2-1 win Sunday at the Winsberg Tournament in Los Angeles.

WSU had a chance to score early as Angie Clark led off the game by reaching on an error and stealing second, but was stranded there as the next three batters were retired.  The Raiders then had runners on the corners with no outs in the second as Hanna Floyd doubled to right center and Taylor Knore singled up the middle, but again came up empty.

Wright State finally broke the scoreless deadlock with a run in the fifth.  Becka Peterson reached on an infield hit to start the frame and after pinch-runner Alanna Williams moved up to second on a passed ball, pinch-hitter Kaitlyn Kite bunted her to third.  Clark then delivered a hit up the middle to plate Williams with the run.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when the Cowgirls rallied for the win.  After the leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and bunted to second, Koetting drove the second pitch she saw over the fence in left for the game-winning two-run home run.

Montana Wear (0-3) suffered the tough-luck loss, allowing just four hits while striking out one.  Offensively, Floyd paced the Raiders with two hits.

Wright State (0-5) is off until competing at the Blues City Classic in Southaven, Mississippi, February 22-23.  The Raiders will face Wichita State, Indiana State, SIU Edwardsville and Samford in that tournament.
