The Wright State softball team had the early lead in its season opener Friday against Long Beach State, only to see the 49ers score seven in the third en route to a 7-4 decision at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles.
The Raiders opened the scoring with a run in the first. With one out, Lindsay Barrett walked and after Hanna Floyd was hit by a pitch, Kacie Rapshus singled up the middle to load the bases. Colleen Schneider then dropped a short single into center to drive in Barrett.
Long Beach, though, scored all seven of their runs in the top of the third to break the game open.
WSU had a chance to cut into the deficit in the fourth as Montana Wear led off with a walk and infield hits by Jess Gorman and Alanna Williams loaded the bases. 49er pitcher Erin Jones-Wesley, however, struck out the next three batters to escape the threat.
Wright State did, however, put together a rally in the seventh, scoring three times. Kristi Boreing led off with an infield hit and went to third as Barrett reached on a two-base throwing error. Both came in on a double to left off the bat of Angie Clark, who later scored as Rapshus singled up the middle and Schneider hit into a fielder's choice.
Gorman and Rapshus paced the Raider offense attack with two hits each while in the circle, Krystian DeWitt pitched 4.1 shutout innings in relief, allowing just three hits while striking out two.
Wright State returns to action later Friday at 7:30 Eastern against host UCLA.
