Women Drop 68-63 Decision at Cleveland State

The Wright State women's basketball team led by as much as 19 late in the first half, only to see Cleveland State explode for 45 points in the second half to pull out a 68-63 decision Thursday night at the Wolstein Center.

The Raiders scored the first seven points of the contest and gradually built on the lead from there, going up 35-16 on a Breanna Stucke three with 3:32 remaining in the first half. 

Cleveland State, though, followed with five straight points and the margin was 37-23 at the half as Haley Schmitt hit two foul shots with 32 seconds left.

WSU hit 13 of 26 shots in the opening 20 minutes, including five of 14 from three-point range, and was a perfect six for six at the foul line while CSU shot 28 percent overall, one of nine from behind the arc, and was eight of 11 at the stripe.

The Vikings chipped away at the deficit in the second half, tying it at 58 on two Shalonda Winton free throws at the 3:34 mark and going in front for good at 63-61 on two Cori Coleman foul shots with 1:44 to play.

The Raiders had a chance to tie the game with a three in the final seconds, but the attempt came up short and Kiersten Green closed out the game by hitting two foul shots with three seconds left.

CSU shot 45 percent in the second half overall, was six of 11 from three and made 13 of 15 free throws while WSU shot 32 percent, was six of 24 from behind the arc and missed its only foul shot attempt.

James led Wright State with 21 points, 15 in the first half, while Kim Demmings had 19 and Stucke had a near double-double of 10 points and nine boards.

Winton paced all scorers with a near double-double of 24 points and nine rebounds for Cleveland State (11-10, 3-5 Horizon), all but three points coming after halftime, while Imani Gordon had 14 and Coleman 10.

Wright State (10-12, 4-5 Horizon) returns to action on Wednesday, February 13, with a 7:00 contest at Detroit.
