The Wright State volleyball team nearly won the first set, only to see Youngstown State rally for a three-set decision in Horizon League action at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium Friday night. The Penguins won the match 26-24, 25-19, 25-22.
The opening set featured 13 ties and six lead changes, including WSU taking the lead at 24-22 on kills by Natalie Catani and Marisa Aiello. YSU, however, tied it on an Alexis Egler kill and a service ace and claimed the set on a Missy Hundelt kill and a Raider attack error.
Youngstown State (12-7, 2-3 Horizon) then broke a 1-1 tie in the second set with four straight points and maintained the lead throughout the rest of the match, jumping out to a 7-1 lead in the final set.
The Penguins finished with a 43-37 edge in kills and outhit the Raiders .194-.120.
Aiello led WSU with 12 kills while Heidi Splinter nearly had a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs. Libero Katie Glassmeyer had 21 digs and Mariah Nussbaum had 12. Setter Ashleigh Lucco dished out 35 assists.
Wright State (2-19, 0-4 Horizon) hosts Cleveland State Saturday night at 7:00.
