The Wright State volleyball team claimed the first set, only to see Loyola hit .389 the rest of the way as the Ramblers won the Horizon League opener for both teams Friday night in Chicago. The Ramblers won the match 18-25, 25-9, 25-21, 25-14.
The Raiders never trailed in the opening set as they took advantage of a service error and a bad set to break a 1-1 tie and later went up 11-5 on a Heidi Splinter kill. The Ramblers would get no closer than four the rest of the way.
Loyola, however, came out swinging in the second set, jumping out to a 12-1 lead and hitting .483 altogether. The Ramblers then broke a 5-5 tie in the third set with five straight points to go in front to stay and then used a 6-0 run to pull away from a 6-6 deadlock in the final set.
Loyola hit .327 on the night, .389 over the final three sets, compared to .154 for WSU and finished with a 64-39 kill advantage.
Splinter posted her third straight double-double and ninth of the season overall by leading the Raiders with 15 kills along with 15 digs. Setter Ashleigh Lucco also recorded a double-double, her sixth of the year, by dishing out 33 assists and tallying 12 digs.
Wright State (2-16, 0-1 Horizon) wraps up its stay in the Windy City with a match at UIC Saturday starting at 5:00 Eastern.
