Despite double-doubles from Heidi Splinter and Ashleigh Lucco, the Wright State volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to host UT Martin Saturday at the First State Skyhawk Invitational. The Skyhawks won the match 25-21, 25-11, 21-25, 25-12.
The opening set, which featured 11 ties and seven lead changes, saw WSU take a 19-17 lead on a Mariah Nussbaum kill before UT Martin went in front with three straight points. Heidi Splinter tied it at 20 with a kill, but the Skyhawks followed with four in a row to take control.
UT Martin led throughout in winning the second set, but the Raiders took the third set as kills from Marisa Aiello and Dani Branco made it 11-9 and Wright State maintained the edge the rest of the way.
The Skyhawks, however, scored five consecutive points after WSU had tallied the first two points of the fourth set and never trailed again.
UT Martin led 52-36 in kills and outhit the Raiders .268-.076.
Splinter posted her second double-double of the season as she had 12 kills and 15 digs as did Lucco as she recorded 29 assists and 14 digs. Libero Katie Glassmeyer chipped in 22 digs.
Wright State (0-6) wraps up play in the tournament Saturday evening against Troy starting at 6:00 Dayton time.
