The Wright State volleyball team fell in three sets to IUPUI in wrapping play in the Thunder Invitational Saturday afternoon in Huntington, West Virginia. The Jaguars won the match 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.
A Marisa Aiello kill tied the opening set at 5-5 before IUPUI followed with nine straight points to take control. The Raiders, though, hung close throughout most of the second set, trailing just 20-18 on a Samantha Daniel kill before the Jaguars broke it open with three in a row.
The third set saw WSU fall behind 10-3 early before rallying to within two at 14-12, a run that included two more Aiello kills and a kill and ace by Heidi Splinter. Three unanswered points, however, opened up the lead again for IUPUI and Wright State would get no closer than three the rest of the way.
The Jaguars led just 39-34 in kills for the match, but outhit the Raiders .276-.108 and held a 10-4 edge in blocks.
Aiello hit .562 for the match as she recorded 10 kills while Mariah Nussbaum had seven kills in hitting .333. Splinter and libero Katie Glassmeyer each posted 12 digs while Natalie Catani had 11.
Senior setter Ashleigh Lucco was selected to the All-Tournament Team as she recorded 68 assists with 19 digs on the weekend, including 32 assists and eight digs against IUPUI.
Wright State (0-3) opens the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, August 28, as the Raiders host Division I newcomer Northern Kentucky at 7:00 in the C.J. McLin Gymnasium.
