Baseball Holds Off Valparaiso

The Wright State baseball team won its fifth straight Saturday afternoon, holding off Valparaiso 4-2 at Emory G. Bauer Field.

It looked bleak for the Raiders early as the Crusaders loaded the bases with no outs in the first on two walks and a hit by pitch.  Andrew Elliott, though, was brought in relief at that point and he limited Valpo to just one run on a sacrifice fly.

WSU eventually took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth.  Corey Davis led off with a home run to right, his second of the season and second in as many days, to tie the game and the second run came across as Tristan Moore singled, stole second, went to third on a Justin Kopale hit up the middle and scored on a fielder's choice play off the bat of Kyle Mossbarger.

Wright State extended the lead to 3-1 in the eighth as Ryan Ashe had a hit up the middle with two outs and scored as Kopale followed with a double to left center, only to see Valparaiso answer with a run of its own against Michael Schum in the bottom of the frame.

The Raiders, however, took advantage of a Valpo error in picking up a key insurance run in the ninth and Schum earned his fourth save of the year by retiring the Crusaders in order in the bottom of the frame, striking out the final two batters looking.

Elliott (1-0) was the winning pitcher as he allowed no runs or walks in five innings with a pair of strikeouts.  Jordan Marker pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh as Elliott, Marker and Schum combined to go nine innings, giving up only one run, four hits and no walks while striking out seven.

Offensively, Kopale and Sam Picchiotti each had two hits.

Wright State (14-10, 6-2 Horizon) wraps up the weekend series with a single game Sunday starting at 2:00 Eastern.
