by WSU Athletic Media Relations

New Wright State volleyball head coach Susan Clements has announced the hiring of Kara Hellmann as an assistant coach.

Hellmann comes to WSU after spending the past five years as an assistant under Clements at Niagara.  While there, Michelle James became the Purple Eagles' all-time assist leader with 3723 and set a school record for assists in a season with 1238 in 2010.  James was a First Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference selection and the MAAC Setter of the Year in 2009 and 2010.

In 2007, Hellmann coached Mallory Boron, who current ranks fifth on the Niagara all-time assist list with 2332.

Before going to Niagara, Hellmann was an assistant for one season for Clements at Georgetown (KY).  There, Hellmann helped the Tigers earn a NAIA tournament berth, a Region IX title and the Mid-South Conference (MSC) Tournament title.  Setter Jenna Gronotte was a First Team MSC honoree after averaging 11.90 assists per set.

Prior to joining the Georgetown staff, Hellmann was the associate head coach for the Club South Volleyball Association and was a private volleyball instructor in Louisville, Kentucky.

A 2006 Georgetown graduate, Hellmann had a standout career for the Tigers.  She holds the NAIA national career record for assists with 7527, was a two-time NAIA Second Team All-American and was selected as the 2005 NAIA Region XI Player of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).  Hellmann was also the MSC Player of the Year each of her final three seasons and was the 2005 Georgetown Female Athlete of the Year.

Hellmann helped lead the Tigers to three NAIA national tournament appearances during her playing career, including an automatic berth in 2005, the 2005 Region XI title, three Region XI runner-up finishes and four MSC regular-season and tournament titles.

A Louisville native, Hellmann has coached and worked at numerous volleyball camps, including elite camps at the University of North Carolina and at the Nike High Performance camps.  Additionally, she worked with Mid-America Sports Complex Volleyball and at the Holy Cross High School volleyball camps in Louisville.
