Ryan Weiss threw 5.2 scoreless innings and Zach Weatherford drove in two to lead the Wright State baseball team to a 5-1 win at USC Upstate Friday afternoon.
The Raiders opened the scoring with two runs in the third. A Kevin Whatley single and walks to Brandon Giltrow and Matt Morrow loaded the bases and Zach Weatherford plated Whatley as he hit into a fielder's choice. Another walk by JD Orr reloaded the bases for Seth Gray, who drove in Giltrow with an infield single.
WSU added another run in the fifth as Gray singled, stole second, went to third on an Adrian Marquez grounder and scored on a Gabe Snyder ground out. Wright State then tacked on a run in the sixth on a Weatherford sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.
The Spartans scored a run in the seventh, only to see the Raiders answer with a run in the ninth on a Marquez RBI single.
Weiss (1-0) earned the win as he scattered six hits and a walk in his 5.2 scoreless innings of work, striking out five. Derek Hendrixson picked up his first save by blanking USC Upstate over the final 1.1 innings, fanning three.
Whatley finished with two hits and two runs scored to lead the WSU offense while Gray had two hits and Weatherford two RBI.
Wright State (5-4) takes on Wofford Saturday at 2:00.
